Bush Preaches to the Choir
President Bush has started another series of speeches on the Iraq War. Why? Will any minds be
changed on the course of the Iraq war as a result of more speeches with the same old one-liners?
We are winning! We need to fight them there, so we don’t have to fight them here! We are spreading
democracy! It seems as though the last round of speeches, to carefully selected audiences, had a
minimal impact on public opinion.
In my opinion, the only audience left for President Bush is the choir. The majority of Americans
understand the war in Iraq is a difficult situation. The American people understand that we are in a
war with many unanswered questions. Whether the war was justified or not, we are there! What is
President Bush trying to sell? It seems like a waste of time to preach to just those who already
support your decisions.
The American people don’t need to be educated on the war in Iraq or the recent proposed ports
contract for Dubai Ports World. When politicians make the statement: the American people aren’t
dumb, I find it offensive. In the same breath, some politicians claim the American people just don’t
understand the facts.
The Bush Administration has cried wolf on national security whenever it was politically advantageous.
When 70% of the American people opposed the Dubai Ports World deal for what seems to be
reasonable security concerns, the President claims the American people don’t understand the
importance of the deal. I guess the American people aren’t so dumb when they agree with the
President.
Maybe, President Bush is preaching to the choir because his parables aren’t resonating with the
flock.
