Fear Mongering
A person promoting something undesirable is a Monger. Fear Mongering is often used to influence
people to action or inaction. In the case of politics, fear mongers will exaggerate possible dangers to
influence opinion on who can better protect the people.
Causing anxiety and fear in the population for political gain is despicable, yet we see Fear Mongering
used to defend unpopular positions and to justify the use of force.
We all know that we live in a dangerous world with possible attacks from radical groups so fear
mongering is a powerful tactic.
If we understand the difference between real threats and exaggerations, fear mongering becomes less
effective for those seeking political gain by raising fear levels. Constant patterns of fear mongering
helps expose those who use fear to influence.
